Understanding

 The Continuum of Understanding

تسلسل عملية الفهم

One gains knowledge through context (experiences)

and understanding.

ان الانسان يكتسب المعرفة من خلال سياق الخبرات وفهمها

When one has context,

one can weave the various relationships of the experiences.

 The greater the context,

 the greater the variety of experiences that one is able

 to pull from.

The greater one understands the subject matter,

 the more one is able to weave past experiences (context)

 into new knowledge by absorbing,

doing, interacting, and reflecting.

Thus, understanding is a continuum (Cleveland, 1982):

 Ω Ways to kill an idea Ω

It is far easier to kill an idea than to encourage it and turn it into a useful solution.

Be careful not to destroy people’s ideas or they will stop telling you about them and go and tell someone else.
It is extremely hard to sound constructive when someone tells you about an idea they have had, especially if the idea seems foolish and unworkable.

 But remember, people do not willingly put forward bad ideas in normal situations and you should first try to understand why they are telling you about the idea.

 There is likely to be something in the idea which is very useful to you.

Alternatively you will have the opportunity to help them understand why the idea will not work.

 You must first understand why they think it will work if you are to explain it in a way that they appreciate.

To kill an idea, say…

• 1- A good idea, but …
• 2- Good in theory, but …
• 3- Be practical, that’s too futuristic
• 4- People won’t like it
• 5- Costs too much
• 6- Don’t start anything yet
• 7- It needs more study
• 8- It’s not budgeted, maybe next year
• 9- It’s not good enough
• 10- Too much hassle
• 11- Let’s make a survey first
• 12- Against the company policy
• 13- It’s not part of your job
• 14- It is not our problem
• 15- The directors won’t go for it
• 16- The old timers won’t use it
• 17- Too hard to organize
• 18- We have been doing it another way for a long time and it works fine
• 19- If it’s so good, why hasn’t someone suggested it already?
• 20- Ahead of its time, people are not ready for it
• سابق لأوانه
• 21- Let’s sit on it a while
• دعنا ندرسها
• 22- Let’s discuss it (*and then not doing so*)
• دعنا نناقشها
• 23- We’ve never done it that way before
• = لم نمارسها بهذه الطريقة من قبل
• 24- Has anyone else tried it successfully?
• = هل جربها أحد بنجاح من قبل   
• 25- We have tried that before and it didn’t work
• = لقد جربناها من قبل ولكن دون جدوى
• 26- Just ignoring what they have said.
